An Introduction To Electrochemistry

Electrochemistry affects all of us every day.   Batteries which start your car, run calculators and wristwatches, and supply emergency power all operate on electrochemical principles.  Corrosion of pipes, bridges, boats, and automobiles can be prevented with knowledge of basic electrochemical principles.  Nerve impulses are the result of electrochemical reactions in our bodies.

In this experiment, students will build batteries, learn how their behavior can be explained by the electrochemical series, and learn how the Nernst equation can help them predict changes in the voltage output of an electrochemical cell when ion concentrations change.
